Implanon Relaunch & Training: June 2012, Lahore & Multan

As part of our continued efforts to contribute towards women’s health in Pakistan, OBS – A Strategic Partner of Merck & Co. representing their products in Pakistan, has re-launched “Implanon” as part of the National Family Planning Program in collaboration with Population Programme Wing and USAID.

Implanon – A product of Merck & Co. is the world’s first Single Rod, Sub-dermal long acting implant that offers effective contraception for duration of 3 years.

This Program has been designed to train the doctors working in the Reproductive Health Services Centers (RHSC) all over Pakistan. In order to achieve our target of providing best quality healthcare services, we conducted the training at two venues, Lahore covering the North and Multan covering the South regions of the country.  

Implanon Launch and Training: 11-12th June 2012, Lahore

An elaborate two day training program was organized by OBS Healthcare in Lahore. The Program was inaugurated by Mr. Altaf Eazad Khan, Secretary Population Welfare Department Punjab. Dr Shafqat Jawaid Sheikh, Director General Planning & Development Division, Pakistan, and Brig. Zafar Jamil, Provisional Logistics Manager, USAID also graced the event by their presence.

Dr Jehanzeb Akram, Director Strategic Planning & Business Development OBS Group gave an overview of the company profile. He also highlighted the role of Merck & Co. hand-in-hand with OBS in continued efforts towards improving women’s health in our society. The audience was also addressed by Mr Altaf Eazad Khan and Dr Shafqat Jawaid, who highlighted the importance of women’s reproductive health and the significance of effective contraceptive methods. Dr Shafqat Jawaid explained the objectives of the training and the continued efforts of Population Program Wing to enhance the family planning options.   After the inauguration, a formal training of the participants was started by The Master Trainers: Dr Mumtaz Esker, former Director General Population Planning Wing and Dr Zakia Akhter  - both have received their International Training on Implanon in 2003 in Egypt and Netherlands respectively.

The first day of the training was designed to impart theoretical knowledge to the participants – Dr Saeed Shekhani, Director Medical Services OBS Group gave detailed introduction about the product profile and the relevant clinical trials. Later the master trainers trained the participants on “how to insert Implanon” on dummy mannequins. Each participant was provided with a complete Training Kit (comprising of mannequin, placebo implant and the implanon ) imported from Netherlands.   On the second day of the training, the participants were given an equal opportunity to perform “Live Insertion of Implanon” under the supervision of our Master Trainers. This practice session was conducted at Lady Wellington Hospital, Lahore in order to impart skill and confidence in the RHSC workers and successful live insertions were performed on 26 healthy volunteers.

We had 26 participants from the North Region including doctors from Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Patpattan, Sahiwal, Wah Cantt, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Muzaffarabad, Chiniot, Jaranwala,  Peshawar, Swat, Abbotabad, FATA (Khyber Agency), AJK.

The session was concluded in the presence of Mr. Haseeb Athar, Additional Secretary Population Development Division and Brig Zafar Jamil, Provisional Logistics Manager USAID and certificates were awarded to the Master trainers and the successfully trained RHSC doctors.

Implanon Launch and Training: 13-14th June 2012, Multan

An elaborate two day training program was organized by OBS Healthcare in Multan on the same pattern as that in Lahore. The Program was inaugurated by Dr Shafqat Jawaid Sheikh, Director General Planning & Development Division, Pakistan, who highlighted the importance of women’s reproductive health and the significance of effective contraceptive methods.

Dr Jehanzeb Akram, Director Strategic Planning & Business Development OBS Group shared the vision of OBS and its role in alliance with Merck & Co. for active contribution towards improvisation of women’s health.

After the inauguration, a formal training of the participants was started. Dr Saeed Shekhani, Director Medical Services OBS Group gave a comprehensive lecture on the product profile of Implanon and also discussed the various landmark clinical trials on Implanon.

Later in the day  The Master Trainers: Dr Mumtaz Esker, former Director General Population Planning Wing who received her International Training on Implanon in 2003 in Egypt and Dr Hania Hamid from Nishtar Hospital Multan, trained the participants on “how to insert Implanon” on dummy mannequins. Each participant was provided with a complete take home Training Kit (comprising of mannequin, placebo implant and the implanon) imported from Netherlands.   On the second day of the training, a live practice session was conducted at Nishtar Hospital Multan. All the participants were given an equal opportunity to perform “Live Insertion of Implanon” under the supervision of our Master Trainers. This practice session was conducted in order to impart skill and confidence in the RHSC workers and successful live insertions were performed on 35 healthy volunteers.

We had 31 participants from the South Region including doctors from Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Multan, Loralai, Bahawalpur, Matiary District, Lodhran, Shikarpur, MuzaffarGarh, Mian Channo, Khanewal, Mirpurkhas, Omerkot, Sukkur, Thatta, Rahim Yar Khan, Layya, Kambhat.

The session was concluded in the presence of Mr. Altaf Eazad Kahn, Secretary Population Welfare Department Punjab and Dr Shafqat Jawaid Shaikh, Director General Population Program Wing, Planning and Development Division and certificates were awarded to the Master trainers and the successfully trained RHSC doctors.
